A Man And His Vodka

I have never claimed to be the most knowledgeable, the biggest collector, or the keenest of vodka experts. Vodka Life is more about anytime enjoyment, and sharing what I've learned over the years.

A Vice that started in college

After a simply horrific experience with beer that resulted with me never being able to drink the brew again, I searched for something else. And in college, land of the never-ending keg party, that was no simple task. I tried wine coolers until the teasing and insults became unbearable. I tried all the shot-type drinks: Jagermiester, Goldschlagger, Sambuca, Shnapps, and so on. I learned two things: They are nearly impossible to drink all night, and the hangover headaches they created the next morning were truly phenomenal. Next, I tried all the standard mixed drinks: Rum & Coke, Jack & Coke, Tom Collins, Sex on the beach, Screwdriver etc. They were fine, but I found myself leaning towards the clear liquors again and again. White Rum over Spiced Rum, Gin over Tequila, Vodka over Whiskey.I was taking both Whiskey and Vodka to most college parties, but unfortunately at that time, they both also required mixers. While my friends could stop anywhere for a 6-pack, I had to stop at both a liquor store, and a grocery store for coke, orange juice, cranberry juice, sour mix, and/or ice.As the years passed, I came to appreciate a fine glass of wine, an excellent port, and smooth glass of single malt scotch. But through it all, vodka has always been as reliable as a favorite pair of jeans.

My "Ah Ha" moment with vodka

At restaurant called E & E's Steakout Grill in Belleair, FL, and at the recommendation of my father-in-law, I had a Chopin onthe rocks before dinner with the family. The light went on. Good frozen vodka served straight didn't need a variety of mixers to be good. It was a moment of clarity, "ah ha," now THIS is GOOD.Chopin remains on my Top 10 list, if for no other reason than nostalgia. I have discovered better vodkas, but it's symbolic of the type of vodka that can define the difference between drinking vodka and truly enjoying it.
